This recipe came from my great-great-grandmother, and was handed down to all the women in my family, and we are all Southern. I am the first one to commit the sin of using a food processor (lol) but I find it works very well. But I also love them smeared with strawberry jam or covered in country gravy loaded with spicy pork sausage. Sift flour and baking soda together in a large bowl; cut in shortening with a knife or pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Steps to make Buttermilk Biscuits:
- Preheat the oven to 450F/230C. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the butter one by one and mix slowly.
- Add the buttermilk and mix until just combined.
- Line a baking sheet and brush some oil on evenly.
- Turn the dough out and roll flat then fold and roll flat again. Cut biscuits out of the dough using desired size of biscuit cutter.
- Place on prepared baking sheet and bake 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve warm and enjoy!
